The Red Sea sits on a narrow strip between the desert and a reef system that runs almost the full length of the coast. Water stays warm enough to dive comfortably most of the year, visibility is consistently good, and the range is wide — easy sheltered bays for new divers, drift dives along sheer walls for the more experienced, and a run of wartime wrecks, the SS Thistlegorm chief among them, that draw divers back on their own. Liveaboards cover the southern stretch and the offshore reefs for anyone who wants a week fully on the water rather than day boats out of a resort town.
Diveable year-round, which is part of the appeal. Spring and autumn bring the calmest seas and the most comfortable air temperatures if you're also spending time above water. Summer is warmer underwater but busier and hotter on land. Winter is cooler and windier on the surface, with occasional choppier crossings on the longer boat routes, but the diving itself holds up. Most travelers fly into Hurghada or Sharm El Sheikh, with Marsa Alam as a quieter third option further south. A basic Open Water certification covers the shallower reef sites; the wrecks and stronger drift dives are better suited to advanced divers or those willing to do a refresher first. Bring your own mask and computer if you have them — everything else is easy to rent locally. As with anywhere we refer, we only introduce you to schools we've personally vetted for safety and equipment upkeep, not the ones that simply pay for placement.
